The reading states that the actions of people are mapped by the social order and that the appropriateness of the action in relation to a particular society dictates if one will perform it. This is certainly true; murder, rape, and theft are social abnormalities that result in imprisonment or worse. However, Steve Duck describes the need to please others as though we are slaves to our surroundings, which I disagree with. Perhaps other people would go completely wild if it was not for the establishment's ground rules, but I possess an introverted personality. Therefore, the need to adhere to society's standards oftentimes makes me step outside of my comfort zone. I am not attempting to be someone that I am not, but I am expanding on myself because society expects me to, and that is never a bad thing. For example, the U of O orientation has many rituals that defies social norms, but is in sync with Ozarks' standards. Following through on them allows people to meet new people, connect as a group, have fun, and lighten up, and most people would not go through with it if they did not feel obligated to in the first place.
