The earliest memories of childhood for some people are treasured things that they keep close and share with a few close friends. For others early memories are recollections of the past that they wish they could forget. The few people I've spoken to about their early memories have given me stories of warmth and security. On rare occasions I hear about the insecurity and fear that goes along with living in a bad neighborhood or fighting parents. The story changes from person to person, but the feelings remain basically the same.

I have a really close friend who had a tough childhood. lived in the hood, and had fighting parents. I believe the offspring success is product of the hardwork of parents. However, when I was talking to my friend, he told me he wished he could say the same thing, but he couldn't. He explained me how that situation made him develop trust issues. So I believe that early childhood experiences shapes your persona in great manner.

I believe there are exceptions to the rule. I have a really close friend too who had a rough childhood, and though she went through a lot, for some reason she seems to be one of the most determined, optimistic and happiest person I've met. As you said, the story changes from person to person.
