"[Y]our choices of ways to 'do' intimacy are channeled by your societal and experiential backgrounds rather than just by your personal emotions alone" (Duck 34).

I can definitely testify that this statement is true. Coming from Malaysia, I can definitely see the differences in culture when it comes to romance and relationships and how that affects my choices in relationships. In my country, public displays of affection is not really encouraged. In fact, some people, especially those of the older generation, strongly oppose public displays of affection. It is seen as inappropriate and at times rude as it may make others feel uncomfortable. Furthermore, when one practices public displays of affection, it may reflect negatively on the individual's family as a whole; causing others to question the way the individual was raised by his or her parents. I can definitely see the effects of growing up in this culture on my choices and preferences when it comes to intimacy. I'm generally uncomfortable with public displays of affection, which means I don't really practice it either. This is more of a personal than a cultural issue to me, but the culture that I grew up in definitely has a role to play in affecting the way I feel about public displays of affection. In addition, in the culture that I was raised in, sex before marriage is not at all acceptable. I do have to say that the culture is changing, and sadly, people are beginning to practice it more; however, because of how much it is still generally disapproved of, even if a couple has sex before they're married, it is never mentioned or spoken of. Again, it will reflect very negatively on the family.

It's cool to see the differences in culture. Back home (Nicaragua) people have mixed opinions about this issue. I guess the younger generations have become very careless about PDA. They can care less if someone is sitting next to you, they'll just make out in front of you.
