Group 1 - Slumdog Millionaire Symbolism
• The trains represent Jamal’s personality, strength, and his drive to push forward. It is moving on to different things. Jamal is attempting to move from his reality to another place. Trains represents his struggle to find Latika. They still connect to roots and remain humble. Also maintains a connotation of poverty. • Jamal jumping into the feces represents his devotion and foreshadows his commitment to Latika. Expresses Jamal’s single-mindedness towards his goals. He probably could have found another way out of the bathroom and he probably could have found another way to reach Latika, but he takes big jumps when he attempts to solve his problems. • Jamal does not know that “the truth alone triumphs” because he was raised in an environment where it was not key for survival to know this. It means little to most of the other characters because they are greedy and outwardly lie to get what they desire. Slumdog Millionaire combines two opposites because they are so full of contradictions that someone would be compelled to watch it. It also reflects that Jamal is: a slumdog millionaire.
