I feel like this questions dives into an unknown phenomena about the English language and how or why most objects got their name. I believe that our ancestors developing the language gave a name for the front of the hand because it was useful to it. The front of the hand is used to grasp other objects, to touch things, and it has many other gentle or vicious duties. The back of the hand however, has almost no use. I mean, on occasion I use the back of my hand as a notepad to remind myself for something when I don't have my phone handy. So the back of the hand merely becomes a sight for eyes rather than a useful tool.
