I believe the reason we have a name for the front of the hand (Palm) is because that part of the hand is more widely used. When you grab something you wrap your hand around it with your Palm facing the object. You do not press the back of your hand against the object and then your fingers bend over and around the object. For this reason the back of the hand, seemingly less operationally critical, continues to only have its technical name. Opisthenar, meaning "The back of the hand," a term used in medicine and study of the anatomy, and rarely used elsewhere. However there is no commonly referred to "name" for the back of the hand.

If you could what would you name the back of your hand?  Would you name it at all? Why or why not?
