This question actually reminds me of a "Boy Meets World" episode where the Husband, Alan, bought his wife a garbage compactor for their anniversary. Amy was not excited at all, actually she was extremely frustrated.
Personally, I see a problem with the husband in this question buying his wife a vacuum cleaner for her birthday. I still believe in true romance and surprises. I would hope that when I have a relationship the guy would be a spur of the moment, surprise individual. Those are the best kind of memories and presents. The vacuum cleaner says that it was necessary, but not for that particular occasion.
Another way to look at this question is the wife's reaction. Would you be mad if he didn't take the time to thoughtfully buy flowers and jewelry? Maybe he was just trying to meet your needs? Are you dropping the right hints? Should we have to drop hints in a relationship?
I blame Nicolas Sparks for my expectations and high standards to men. ;)

Probably one of the best gifts that I have got from a guy in a relationship. We started dating six days before my birthday and I came home to this on my desk! I'm such a sucker for flowers! |
