People talk about trivia because too many serious conversations can be a serious turnoff in any relationship. I personally don’t have a problem saying anything I want in public unless it will affect my current/future prospects or it could influence someone else in a negative way (for example, swearing around children). If I think I will be overheard, I usually try to change the location we are in. If strangers hear me, I don’t care unless I am waiting on someone I have never met and fear a stranger might be that someone. Drunk people do not get criticized for violating social norms in a bar because simply the act of being in a bar violates the stereotypical positive social norm. I personally don’t mind talking about personal stuff anywhere and anytime as long as it does not hold me back from my other activities, though I am cautious about who can hear me. I do not want someone I know to have leverage over me.

Talking about trivia is okay, but I enjoy a lot talking about serious things every once in a while
