I had to think about this for a second... I had never actually realized about the back of our hand not having a proper name like "palm" is for the front of the hand. It is curious because in spanish there is a specific name for both the front and the back. Anyways, I believe that the front of the hands, or the palms are the medium through which we can "feel" things, and just as we feel and touch, we learn. The palm of our hands is meant to explore, to reach out, and to provide us with information that can help us gain knowledge about life for the future. As we gain experience, sometimes our palms might be a little rough, but I think that only means that's represents a life well-lived.
