The interesting thing about the social order is that even though there are stereotypes about people (that are often dependent on their nonverbal symbols), people love to see stereotypes broken. Using myself as an example, I have been told by several people that I look like a punk (jewelry, hats, clothes, skating), but I've noticed that a lot of people who give me a chance endear themselves to me more than they do to many other peers or employees. Another example is a friend who was a single mother in high school. She overcame the prejudice that comes with the stereotype by attending college, raising her baby, maintaining a fulltime job, and playing tennis to an extent that she is on the verge of qualifying for the US Open. When someone gets thrown into a stereotype, regardless of what kind it is, they become an underdog to society (because their expectations have been given a limit). By establishing a stereotype for someone, they are held accountable to the expectations of their respective group. By surpassing the stereotypical barriers, society is able to evolve.

I agree with this so much. It's human nature to pull for the underdog!
