There are a lot of metaphors used about relationships, though it is surprising how many of them are cynical. So many people are in relationships, yet no one seems to have anything good to say about them. There are not any particular ones that come to mind, but a reoccurring joke between friends and me when one of us gets into a relationship is, “Welcome to Hell.” Obviously, no one would logically enter a relationship knowing it would be bad, but perhaps by preemptively acknowledging the difficulty of it, we feel we are able to thwart some of the pain.
