there are many things that may or may not affect a relationship. like Ex's they tend to affect  relationships alot, also distance plays a big part in a relationship. that is why Facebook twitter and all these other websites are so popular. they alow you to keep in contact with friends and ex's with out any problems. Id say they are a big help but the biggest help would have to be my cell phone. I never had a problem with my friends trying to talk to me to much, and if im busy i just call or text them back when i have free time.
