I think that society emphasizes the fact that we are supposed to be with someone similar to us in many ways. Even the biblical thought of  being with someone who's not an equal yoke, shows us that we are supposed to be with someone that's similar to us in beliefs, personality etc. However, I do not think that is crucial for the success of a relationship to be with someone who is just like you. I think that a bit of variety may even help the relationship because two people who have different opinions and personalities may balance each other out. My roommate believes that being in a relationship with someone who's different than her, makes things more fun, but at the same time they have to work their differences somehow and it may take more work.
