I think of love in several levels for Americans. Attraction is the first, where we see someone we want and we pursue them for their looks alone. Getting to know their personality is next. When we do this we find out if the other person is actually compatible with us on a deeper level than sexual attraction. Personality is essential to have a long term relationship in our eyes because unlike in other cultures where marriage is more of a partnership, in America we marry for love (supposedly), and for a relationship that'll last a lifetime.
