I hold a strong disdain for my biological father, and I discovered a week ago that he had developed emphysema as a result of being a lifelong smoker. Perhaps it is just my own biased opinion, but I felt he was sick in the mind before he became sick in the body, and it feels that way for a lot of people, albeit to a lesser extreme. Age can change people drastically; my opinions on the elderly vary from person to person. My grandparents on my fathers' side had their marriage together, their life intact, and kindness for everyone they met, so in my eyes, they were two of the most beautiful people in the world. I hold similar feelings for my grandparents on my mom's side, but now I am aware of the close-minded and traditional values they hold that I view as a weakness in today's day and age. In general, the elderly just become more beautiful as life goes on, provided they don't fall to feelings of bitterness or senility.

I definitely agree. People's actions are a result of their thoughts. This relates to what I was talking about in my post, which is that even when people get old, how they behave will depend on what goes through their mind; they can be 70 and still doing the most adventurous things if they decide that they're not going to allow their bodies to keep them from enjoying life.
