I think people talk trivia because sometimes there are important matters that have to be said or discussed at that very moment, but still don't want to spill the beans to everybody or do not want to reveal that much information as to make others feel like they have a say in it. I do talk trivia and admit that I do not say the same things in a public place depending on what I'm talking about. If I want to have a conversation with a friend about something, or maybe I want to vent out something that's bothering me, I usually try to step away from the crowd and talk to them where other people won't listen. My friends know this... I usually check the perimeter first to make sure there's nobody that can overhear or if there is, make sure there's nobody that knows the context.
